The software that was associated with the attack had been released in July 2010, but had not been seen until this date. The software was designed to steal documents from any computer infected with it by using Windows' XLS functionality. If executed properly, it would make copies of all files related to document formatting before sending them back to another server in Russia. What makes this attack different from other cyber attacks is that it affects every computer on which the malware has successfully executed even if they are not connected to networks or not being used at all when attacked. The software was released by the software developer called 64 bit sentemul 2010. It is not known who created this specific piece of malware, but it is believed that the author was Russian in either Chita or Yakutsk. The latest iteration of the software contained an error in the program which prevented it from running properly. The error happened when there was not enough memory to execute all of its functions; therefore only certain computers were affected.Security experts noticed that since this attack used Microsoft's XLL function, all it took for it to be able to successfully invade a computer was for someone to simply create a malicious Excel file and send that file into an email or even put it onto a web server. There were even instances where it was able to steal files from inside of a virtual machine. This protected the software from needing to embed malicious code into an executable file or similar type of program. It also helped prevent detection by antivirus software because the malware did not contain malicious code; rather, it used an existing function within Microsoft Office and exploited it.Once the malware was downloaded and executed on a computer, it made copies of all XLS files and sent them to another server in Russia called kristallnova2010@mail.ru. Once there, the data is believed to be taken by their IT department and used for analysis. The server where the malware was downloaded from is unknown. Additionally, no actual organization is named by the author. This means that it could have been anyone who had access to this server, including a government agency or a cybercriminal group. After the software executed successfully on a computer, it would make 8 additional copies of itself and place them in different directories on the hard drive.On November 12th, it was discovered that this attack was limited only to computers running Microsoft's Windows operating system and not Macs or Linux computers. The reason why this was discovered is due to an internal error within the original version of the malware that caused it to only infect computers running Windows. Although the error was corrected in later versions of the software, it only affected the first version. Furthermore, many computers were not even infected at all; therefore the attack was limited to about 5,000 computers. The actual number of computers that were actually hit by this malware is unknown. This is because others were not infected with the malware which allowed them to be immune to it. However, Norton antivirus software correctly detected it as a known threat and successfully prevented its spread on most computers that accessed their website.Security experts noted that this attack may have been meant as a warning from another nation or even another state to cyberexperts about how easily they could be infiltrated by Russian-made malware.
